In Norse mythology the Norns are a trio of female beings who rule the destiny of gods and men, twining the thread of life. There are other equivalents that descend from the Proto-Indo-European culture. This derives from Roman mythology, in which they are the Parcae or Fata, plural of Latin: fatum, meaning prophetic declaration, oracle, or destiny euphemistically, the "sparing ones". The three Moirai are known in English ( wyrd) as the Fates. The Norns spin the threads of fate at the foot of Yggdrasil, the tree of the world. Her mother thinks her obsession with death, black clothing, and the local cemetery is a bid for attention. How does Olivia handle being the girl with the ghost hand? Well, she's a little bit morbid and a whole lot snarky. Instead of a right hand made of flesh and blood, she was born with a hand made of ethereal energy. Seventeen-year-old Olivia Black has a rare birth defect known as Psyche Sans Soma, or PSS. There are repeated references to one of the characters having “committed suicide” – we are now so far beyond thinking of suicide as committing a crime that this really jarred with me. First published in 1999, it has some language I found problematic. It all feels unbalanced and the structure of the book – a vast amount of the first half is flashbacks and backstory about a couple of the characters that is either largely immaterial to the story or could be woven in far less intrusively – chokes the flow.Īnother challenge is that, reading it in 2020, the book feels dated. And Joe Ashworth is barely sketched in at all, which is a shame as he’s such a tremendous foil for Vera. However, it was worth it for when the story finally lifts off around page 400, with Vera emerging for the first time as the central point of view.įor much of the book, Vera is only glimpsed – not mentioned at all until a couple of hundred pages in other than a minor reference you’d only recognise if you already knew her as a character. I love Ann Cleeves and that’s the only reason I kept going with The Crow Trap, the first in the Vera series (I’ve read all the Shetland novels and a later Vera mystery). She really is a gift to lesfic audio books. Their relationship is written so beautifully and with an amazing intensity. Their new relationship is tested and personal growth occurs. But, this one follows on from the first, with the same characters. I wish I'd actually read the first one myself, rather than heard the audio book. Story wise, this is the second story in this series, so it would make little sense without having read the first one. And it takes something special to make me actually cry whilst listening. I cried, I laughed, I was moved for long periods. Because the performance is so good, it made me love the story and characters more, made me totally invested from start to finish. Yes, she reads loads of lesfic, has made a specialism of it, but that is because she's so good, so invested and puts so much emotional energy into her performances. I think this is one of her best performances, and I've heard a few. IMO The reader of the first book took some getting used to, and the book is a long way down my 'listen again' list for that reason. I couldn't disagree more with the reviewer who preferred the reader of the first I instalment of this series. |
